I have a friend who is petrified of needles. The thought of going for a blood test immediately fills him with fear. His pulse races, he breaks out in a sweat and he instantly feels sick. He finds a thousand reasons not to have a blood test. “Ew, ew, ew, no thank you!” With this kind of thinking, it is unlikely he will change his behaviour and have a blood test.
