Wake Up and WIN

May 9, 2024

Most of us wander around in a daze of unconsciousness! Our eyes are open but our brains are not registering what is really happening in our world and how we are shaping it! What would your world be like if you were really aware of what your contribution was to every situation you find yourself in?  For example, when I speak at conferences, I say that all communication is in loops. What you do, affects the other person, which in turn affects you and so on. Whenever we interact with somebody who’s behaviour we don’t like, we invariably would like them to change.  We all want the OTHER person to change don’t we? But there is little – read NO…

Your Mood Matters

February 8, 2024

The Harvard Business Review (HBR) lists emotional intelligence (EQ) as the number one quality of a great leader. The essence of EQ is to know yourself, manage yourself and manage relationships. Knowing yourself is the key as it allows you to manage yourself, which allows you to manage others. Out of all the various aspects of emotional intelligence, HBR states that the leader’s mood has the most significant impact on the culture of an organisation   (…and the same applies in the classroom) DUH! Can you recall a time when you had a boss who stormed out of his / her office?   As they stomped around the school looking like thunder, did you immediately look up and think, “Oh…

Attitude Adjustment Hour- Part 2

July 20, 2023

In part 1, I wrote about the importance of reflecting on our attitude and adjusting it,      if necessary, through an Attitude Adjustment Hour. I challenged you to get some feedback from your partner or children about the attitude you display when you get home each day. I’d suggest it might be a good exercise to have a few attitude adjustment moments each day.  Perhaps on the way to school, become conscious of what you are thinking about work and your day.  Do you have a positive or negative attitude? Are you feeling enthusiastic or bored? Consider what sort of attitude or thinking you could choose instead? Perhaps at lunchtime, spend a few minutes listening to yourself and the quality of…

Attitude Adjustment Hour- Part 1

July 13, 2023

Most of us would be familiar with the term ‘Happy Hour’ (also known in some places as ‘attitude adjustment hour’) used by many hotels to promote their half price drinks between 5pm ish and 6pm ish.  How awful that we link alcohol with attitude adjustment but the concept of attitude adjustment is great. ‘Attitude’ is defined in the dictionary ‘posture of the body; settled behaviour as showing opinion’.  The thesaurus uses these words – ‘stance, type, kind, pattern, frame of mind, mood’. It seems to me that attitude refers to the way we perceive things in life; what we filter all our information through; the ‘glasses’ through which we look at the world; the way we taint, colour or tint…

The Joy of Change (Part 1)

February 9, 2023

This is my next mission – to help people understand that change is possible and can be joyful. The good news is that science says we can change! We are not hard wired. A leopard can change its spots. Well, maybe a leopard can’t, but we can! Essentially, neuroplasticity describes the brain’s ability to set up new connections – everything in life is about connections, at a brain and heart level. The Brain Level and the Power of Focus and Attention I somehow knew this when I was 23 and practicing as a new, enthusiastic, and excited physical therapist. I was working in the neurological ward and I used to explain to my stroke patients that the first time they…
